History
RGIS is an acronym for Retail Grocery Inventory Services. Thomas J. Nicholson founded RGIS in 1958 to offer grocery stores an accurate and economical alternative to in-house inventories. Within a few years the business expanded beyond the Midwest and began conducting counts across the United States and around the world, and its headquarters moved from the basement of the Nicholson home to an office in Detroit, Michigan. In the 1960s new offices opened in Illinois, Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Louisiana and Minnesota, and RGIS created an international presence in Canada. In the 1970s RGIS invested in new technologies, introducing the SCM electronic calculator and custom-designed TJN calculator. In the 1980s RGIS launched the Audit microcomputer, proprietary technology, and developed an HQ Data Center for processing information. In the 1990s global reach increased with offices in Mexico, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Israel and Brazil, and the Portable Financial (PORTFN) program was introduced. In the 2000s offices opened in ten more countries, RGIS released the RM-1 wireless scanner, and Blackstone acquired RGIS. In the 2010s advances in wireless technology and software made real-time reporting possible and mobile apps added new levels of insights and transparency. Decades later RGIS performs more than 230,000 inventories globally per year for companies of all types and sizes.
