Overview

Royal Canin is a French-origin pet-food brand and a division of Mars, Incorporated. It develops and sells nutrition for cats and dogs, with products organized around factors such as species, breed, life stage, size, lifestyle, physiological condition, and diagnosed health needs. The brand is particularly associated with veterinary diets, breed-specific formulas, and the principle of improving animal health through nutrition. The company was founded in 1968 by French veterinary surgeon Jean Cathary. While running a veterinary practice in the Gard region, Cathary treated dogs suffering from recurring skin and coat problems. He believed that diet was an important part of the solution and developed a cereal-based food in his garage. After observing positive results, he closed his practice and concentrated on manufacturing and distribution under the Royal Canin name. The company imported an extruder from the United States, becoming France's first dry pet-food manufacturer and an early European user of extrusion technology. Its initial commercial focus was breeders and German Shepherd clubs, supported by television advertising and professional recommendations. Royal Canin expanded rapidly during the 1970s. It incorporated as Royal Canin S.A., opened a larger factory at Aimargues, began distributing across Europe, and established a Spanish subsidiary. In 1972, Cathary sold the business to the Guyomarc'h Group, an animal-feed company. Guyomarc'h funded further expansion, including a research center at Saint-Nolff and a second French factory at Cambrai. Royal Canin subsequently established subsidiaries across Europe and broadened its portfolio beyond dry dog food to include canned food, cat food, and other animal nutrition products. The Guyomarc'h Group was acquired by Paribas Affaires Industrielles in 1990. After a difficult financial period in the early 1990s, Royal Canin was separated from the wider group and pursued a strategy centered on dry food, health through nutrition, and expertise in dogs. It was floated on the Paris stock exchange in 1997, then used its strengthened financial position to acquire Crown Pet Foods in 1999 and James Wellbeloved in 2000. Mars, Incorporated acquired Royal Canin in 2002, after European competition requirements led to the disposal of certain assets. Royal Canin was delisted after the acquisition and became part of Mars Petcare's international network. Under Mars, the brand continued to expand its veterinary and specialist portfolio. In 2004, it acquired the US and Canadian veterinary-food brands IVD, Medi-Cal, and Techni-Cal from Del Monte Foods. Royal Canin also developed manufacturing and logistics capacity in Europe, North America, South America, China, Russia, South Korea, and other markets. Its research activities include nutritional studies, veterinary collaboration, breed-focused work, and non-invasive product evaluation involving selected dogs and cats. The brand has also published professional and educational material, including Veterinary Focus and reference works on animal nutrition and breeds. Royal Canin sells through several channels: veterinary clinics, specialist pet retailers, breeders, shelters, working-dog organizations, and other professional networks. Its main product architecture includes everyday foods for cats and dogs, breed- and size-specific nutrition, and veterinary diets for conditions including urinary, gastrointestinal, allergic, hypoallergenic, dental, and weight-management needs. Some veterinary products are distributed under professional or prescription-related restrictions depending on the market. The brand has sponsored animal shows, breeder and veterinary events, and professional forums internationally. Its public activities have also included the Royal Canin Foundation, created in 2020 to support projects examining the role of companion animals in human health. History

Royal Canin began in 1968 when veterinarian Jean Cathary developed a cereal-based food for dogs with skin and coat problems. He produced the initial formula in his garage and, after seeing beneficial results, registered the Royal Canin trademark and left veterinary practice to manufacture pet food. By importing an American extruder, the company became the first French producer of dry pet food and one of the earliest European businesses to apply extrusion at industrial scale. Its first customers were primarily breeders and German Shepherd organizations. The business was incorporated as Royal Canin S.A. in 1970. A larger plant opened at Aimargues, and distribution expanded beyond France. Cathary sold the company to the Guyomarc'h Group in 1972. The new owner supported investment in research and development, including a research center at Saint-Nolff opened in 1973 and a second factory at Cambrai in 1975. During the following decade, Royal Canin established subsidiaries in several European countries, built additional manufacturing capacity, and diversified into canned food, cat food, and other animal-nutrition products. Paribas Affaires Industrielles acquired the Guyomarc'h Group in 1990. Royal Canin recorded a loss in 1993, but the business was subsequently separated from the wider group and placed under new leadership. During the 1990s, management emphasized dry food, health through nutrition, and dog-handling expertise. Royal Canin went public on the Paris stock exchange in 1997. The listing helped finance acquisitions including Crown Pet Foods in 1999 and James Wellbeloved in 2000. Mars, Incorporated acquired Royal Canin in 2002. The transaction required the disposal of certain assets under European competition conditions, and Royal Canin was delisted after becoming part of Mars. In 2004, the company acquired IVD, Medi-Cal, and Techni-Cal from Del Monte Foods, extending its veterinary-food presence in North America. The Mars period brought further international manufacturing and logistics development. Facilities and investments were reported in France, Russia, Poland, Canada, the United States, China, Brazil, and South Korea. Research centers and pet-care facilities supported work on breed differences, growth, digestive capacity, bone development, dental health, allergies, urinary health, and other nutritional requirements. Royal Canin's product philosophy has been summarized as health through nutrition: formulas are intended to address defined needs rather than treat pets as small versions of humans. Royal Canin also developed a professional information ecosystem. It collaborated with veterinarians and academic experts on encyclopedias and nutrition publications and has published Veterinary Focus for the veterinary community. The company participates in breeder, veterinary, and animal-show events and distributes products through specialist, professional, and clinical channels. The brand faced reputational criticism in 2013 after an animal-welfare organization linked a Ukrainian subsidiary's sponsorship activity to events involving illegal bear-baiting and dog fighting. Royal Canin confirmed the allegations and committed to taking action. It was also among the brands affected by the wider 2007 pet-food recalls. In later years, Royal Canin continued product development, including expanded hypoallergenic nutrition and dental-care products. Mars announced substantial investment in French and North American facilities in 2021. Cécile Coutens became president in 2022, and Royal Canin marked its 50th anniversary in 2018.
