Overview
Schneider Electric is a French multinational energy-technology company headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison, France. Its modern business is centered on electrification, automation, digitalization, and sustainability, with products and software used in buildings, data centers, factories, electrical grids, infrastructure, and homes. The company combines physical electrical equipment with control systems, industrial software, connected services, and consulting intended to help customers improve power reliability, operational efficiency, cybersecurity, and carbon performance. The enterprise traces its origins to 1836, when Adolphe and Joseph-Eugène Schneider took control of an iron foundry at Le Creusot in Burgundy. The early Schneider business was a diversified industrial group involved in steel, heavy machinery, rail equipment, shipbuilding, and armaments. During the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries, it expanded its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in France and abroad. The historical company therefore began as a heavy-industrial and engineering concern rather than as an electrical-equipment specialist. After Charles Schneider’s death in 1960, the company was absorbed into the Belgian Empain group and became part of Empain-Schneider. The group was later renamed Schneider SA after Paribas acquired control in the early 1980s. During the 1980s and 1990s, Schneider progressively divested much of its historical steel, shipbuilding, and heavy-industrial activity and redirected capital toward electrical distribution, control, and automation. Important acquisitions included Télémécanique in 1988, Square D in 1991, and Merlin Gerin in 1992. In 1999, following the acquisition of Lexel, the company adopted the name Schneider Electric to reflect its strategic focus on electricity. The company subsequently expanded from traditional electrical equipment into secure power, data-center infrastructure, building management, industrial automation, grid automation, and software. Its acquisition of American Power Conversion, completed in 2007, established a major position in uninterruptible power supplies and data-center infrastructure through the APC brand. Schneider also participated with Alstom in the acquisition of Areva’s transmission and distribution activities in 2010. In later years, its portfolio broadened through investments in industrial software, engineering systems, automation, digital twins, and climate consulting. Schneider became the majority shareholder of AVEVA in 2017 and completed the purchase of the remaining shares in 2023. It also acquired RIB Software, ProLeiT, and EcoAct, strengthening its industrial software and sustainability-consulting capabilities. Schneider Electric’s principal digital architecture is EcoStruxure, an open, connected platform linking sensors and electrical or industrial equipment with edge-control systems, applications, analytics, and services. The platform is used across power management, buildings, data centers, factories, infrastructure, and grids. The company’s product families include MasterPact and PowerPact circuit breakers, Modicon programmable logic controllers, Altivar drives, TeSys motor-control products, Galaxy and APC uninterruptible power systems, PowerLogic monitoring equipment, medium-voltage switchgear, building-management systems, and industrial safety and process-control solutions. Software and services are supplied under Schneider Electric, EcoStruxure, AVEVA, ETAP, and other brand identities. The company positions itself as a partner in the energy transition rather than only as a hardware manufacturer. Its commercial proposition links electrification with digital monitoring, automation, energy efficiency, renewable-energy integration, microgrids, predictive maintenance, and emissions reduction. It serves multinational corporations, utilities, industrial operators, data-center owners, contractors, system integrators, governments, and small and medium-si…
History
Schneider Electric’s history spans a transformation from nineteenth-century heavy industry to a global energy-technology company. In 1836, Adolphe Schneider and Joseph-Eugène Schneider took over an iron foundry at Le Creusot in France. The enterprise developed into Schneider-Creusot and became involved in steelmaking, heavy machinery, locomotives, rail equipment, shipbuilding, and armaments. Its industrial base and engineering expertise enabled it to become one of France’s major industrial groups during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The company expanded its production network during the first half of the twentieth century, including through activities and facilities in France and other European markets. Its arms and heavy-engineering businesses were particularly important after the Franco-Prussian War and during subsequent periods of European rearmament. The historical group was therefore much broader than the electrical-equipment company recognized today. Following the death of Charles Schneider in 1960, the Schneider family’s industrial group was absorbed by the Belgian Empain group during the 1960s. The resulting organization was known as Empain-Schneider. It combined Schneider’s industrial activities with Empain’s electrical and mechanical engineering interests. In 1981, the Empain family sold its controlling interest to Paribas. The group was subsequently renamed Schneider SA in 1980 and underwent extensive restructuring. During the 1980s and 1990s, Schneider reduced its exposure to steel, shipbuilding, and other legacy heavy-industrial activities. It instead concentrated on electrical distribution, industrial control, automation, and related technologies. The acquisition of Télémécanique in 1988 strengthened its industrial-control business. Square D, acquired in 1991, brought a major North American electrical-equipment franchise, while Merlin Gerin, acquired in 1992, reinforced the group’s expertise in electrical distribution and protection. These acquisitions established a foundation for the multi-brand electrical business that later became Schneider Electric. In 1999, after acquiring the Scandinavian switch-maker Lexel, the company changed its name to Schneider Electric. The new name expressed the strategic shift toward electricity and electrical technologies. The company continued to acquire businesses in control, automation, motion, electrical distribution, and industrial components, including Crouzet Automatismes and SIG Positec in 2000. It also expanded its presence in Asia and other emerging markets. A major turning point came with the acquisition of American Power Conversion, announced in 2006 and completed in 2007. APC gave Schneider a leading position in uninterruptible power supplies, data-center power protection, racks, cooling, and physical IT infrastructure. Schneider subsequently integrated APC as a core part of its secure-power and data-center portfolio while maintaining APC as a major customer-facing brand. In 2010, Schneider Electric and Alstom jointly acquired Areva’s transmission and distribution businesses. This strengthened Schneider’s capabilities in medium- and high-voltage distribution, grid management, and utility infrastructure. Over the following decade, the company also acquired businesses in electrical accessories, sensors, industrial control, energy monitoring, and automation software. Schneider’s strategic focus increasingly moved from stand-alone equipment toward connected systems. EcoStruxure became the company’s principal architecture for linking connected products, edge control, analytics, applications, and services. The platform was deployed across buildings, data centers, industry, infrastructure, and electrical grids. This evolution positioned Schneider between traditional electrical-equipment manufacturing, industrial automation, information technology, and sustainability services. The company strengthened its industrial-software activities through its relationship with AVEVA. Schneider became AVEVA’s majority shareholder in 2017 and completed the acquisition of the remaining shares in January 2023. AVEVA added engineering, industrial-information, asset-performance, operations, and digital-twin software to Schneider’s portfolio. Schneider also acquired RIB Software in 2020, adding construction and building-information capabilities, and ProLeiT, which supplied industrial-control and manufacturing-execution software. Sustainability became a central element of the company’s corporate identity and commercial strategy. In 2023, Schneider completed the acquisition of EcoAct, an international climate consultancy specializing in net-zero strategies, climate data, carbon projects, and sustainability transformation. The acquisition allowed Schneider to combine energy-management hardware and software with advisory services for corporate decarbonization. Leadership changed in late 2024 when Olivier Blum was appointed chief executive officer, succeeding Peter Herweck after approximately eighteen months in the role. Jean-Pascal Tricoire, who had served as chief executive for more than a decade and chairman and chief executive during part of that period, remained chairman of the board. Under Blum, Schneider continued to emphasize electrification, artificial-intelligence infrastructure, software, energy efficiency, and operational execution. The company expanded into advanced data-center thermal management through its 2025 acquisition of an initial 75 percent controlling interest in Motivair Corporation. Motivair brought liquid-cooling and thermal-management capabilities for high-performance computing. Schneider also continued its collaboration with NVIDIA on data-center power and cooling architectures, digital twins, and AI-factory designs. In the United States, it announced more than $700 million of planned investment through 2027 to expand manufacturing, supply-chain capabilities, energy infrastructure, and support for AI-related demand. Today, Schneider Electric operates as a global energy-technology group with businesses spanning electrical distribution, industrial automation, secure power, data centers, building management, grid automation, industrial software, and sustainability consulting. Its identity reflects both its long industrial history and its present ambition to connect electrification and digitalization with more efficient and lower-carbon use of energy.
