Overview

Shanshan (杉杉) is a Chinese corporate brand and diversified industrial group headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang. Founded in 1989 by Zheng Yonggang, the company began as a garment manufacturer and became one of China's best-known apparel brands before transforming into a technology-driven industrial group. Today, Shanshan operates across lithium battery materials, optoelectronic materials, healthcare, trade logistics, and commercial real estate. The group's core business is lithium battery materials, carried out through subsidiaries such as Shanshan Technology (上海杉杉科技有限公司), BASF Shanshan (巴斯夫杉杉), and Quzhou Shanshan New Materials (衢州杉杉新材料). These entities produce anode materials, cathode materials, and electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and energy storage. Shanshan is recognized as one of the world's largest suppliers of battery anode materials. In optoelectronic materials, Shanshan operates Shanjin Optoelectronics (杉金光电), a major producer of polarizers for LCD panels. The group also has a healthcare arm, Shanshan Healthcare (杉杉医疗), and commercial property interests including the Ningbo Center (宁波中心) and commercial plazas. Trade logistics is another business line. The flagship listed entity, Ningbo Shanshan Co., Ltd. (杉杉股份), trades on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 600884. The group's corporate culture emphasizes integrity, responsibility, innovation, and dedication, with the Chinese fir tree (杉树) as its brand symbol, representing uprightness, growth, and collective strength. Shanshan has evolved from a traditional apparel company into a high-tech materials group, positioning itself around new energy sources and advanced materials. Its brand identity reflects a commitment to innovation and sustainable development, and it continues to expand its global footprint in the battery materials supply chain.

History

Shanshan was founded in 1989 by Zheng Yonggang in Ningbo, Zhejiang, initially as a garment manufacturer. The company quickly became one of China's leading apparel brands, known for its men's suits and fashion. In the 1990s, Shanshan expanded its retail network across China and became a publicly listed company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In the late 1990s and 2000s, Shanshan began a strategic transformation from traditional apparel into high-technology industries. The group invested in lithium battery materials, establishing Shanshan Technology to produce anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This move positioned Shanshan as an early entrant in China's battery materials sector. Over the following decades, Shanshan expanded its battery materials capacity through subsidiaries and joint ventures, including BASF Shanshan (a joint venture with BASF) and Quzhou Shanshan New Materials. The group became a major global supplier of anode materials, serving electric vehicle and consumer electronics markets. In optoelectronic materials, Shanshan acquired and developed Shanjin Optoelectronics, becoming a significant producer of polarizers for LCD panels. The group also diversified into healthcare with Shanshan Healthcare, trade logistics, and commercial real estate, including the Ningbo Center. The flagship listed entity, Ningbo Shanshan Co., Ltd., trades on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 600884. The group's corporate culture, centered on integrity, responsibility, innovation, and dedication, has been a guiding force throughout its transformation. The Chinese fir tree remains the brand's symbol, representing uprightness and collective growth. Today, Shanshan continues to focus on new energy sources and advanced materials, with a global presence in the battery materials supply chain.
