Overview

Shanshan Tech (Shanghai Shanshan Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese high-tech enterprise specializing in the research, development, production and sales of lithium-ion battery anode materials. Founded in September 1999, it is a subsidiary of Ningbo Shanshan Co., Ltd. (SSE: 600884) and is recognized as the pioneer of China's lithium battery anode material industry, having established the country's first anode material factory. The company is headquartered in the Lingang New Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Shanshan Tech supplies anode materials across four major product families: artificial graphite, natural graphite, new materials (hard carbon and soft carbon), and silicon-based anode materials. Its artificial graphite products, starting from the first-generation FSN-1, have evolved into cost-oriented, energy-oriented, fast-charging and ultra-high-power systems for power batteries, as well as high-energy-density and fast-charging series for consumer electronics. The company serves leading global battery customers and has built an integrated industrial layout spanning raw materials to finished products. With over two decades of development, Shanshan Tech operates eleven major R&D and production bases in Shanghai, Ningbo, Chenzhou, Huzhou, Ningde, Baotou Qingshan, Baotou Jiuyuan, Meishan, Yunnan, Yinzhou and Finland. The company has pursued international expansion, including a 100,000-ton integrated project in Finland and strategic partnerships in Morocco and Europe. In 2022, strategic investors including CATL, BYD, ATL and CNPC Kunlun Capital invested a total of RMB 3.05 billion in Shanghai Shanshan Lithium Battery Material Technology Co., Ltd., a controlled subsidiary of Shanshan Corporation. Shanshan Tech positions itself as an open, innovation-driven and cost-leading global leader in lithium battery anode materials, aiming to promote the new energy revolution with new materials and technologies.

History

Shanshan Tech was founded in September 1999 as Shanghai Shanshan Technology Co., Ltd., establishing China's first lithium-ion battery anode material factory and entering the new energy and new materials industry. In the same year, its mesocarbon microbeads (CMS) project was officially listed as a National 863 Program project. In 2001, the CMS project Phase I was officially put into production, marking a new era for China's anode material industry; the project was supported by the National Science and Technology SME Technology Innovation Fund and the National High-Tech Industrialization Promotion Project. In December 2002, construction began on an 800-ton-per-year lithium-ion anode material project, which was listed as a National High-Tech Industrialization Demonstration Project. In July 2003, Ningbo Shanshan New Material Technology Co., Ltd. was established, marking the company's first step in capacity expansion; in the same year, it was approved by the Ministry of Personnel to establish a postdoctoral research workstation. In January 2005, Shanghai Shanshan Tech was recognized as a Shanghai Enterprise Technology Center. In July 2009, Chenzhou Shanshan New Material Co., Ltd. was established, extending the company's graphitization industrial chain for anode materials. In November 2012, Ningbo Shanshan Tech's 1,000-ton mesocarbon microbeads project was completed and put into production; in the same year, high-end artificial graphite and composite artificial graphite received positive market response. In April 2016, Shanghai Shanshan Tech's power battery anode material base was established in Ningde, forming industrial cluster advantages with partners; in the same year, breakthroughs were achieved in start-stop projects, silicon-based anode projects and fast-charging projects. In August 2019, the Baotou integrated base was officially put into production, enabling Shanshan Tech to achieve an integrated layout from raw materials to finished products; in November, Ningbo Shanshan Tech received the National Manufacturing Single Champion award, the highest honor in manufacturing. In December 2020, Ningbo Shanshan Tech won the Gold Award of the Zhejiang Provincial Industrial Award and CNAS national laboratory certification; in the same year, Shanshan Tech's total assets exceeded RMB 5.2 billion. In March 2021, Shanshan Tech signed a strategic cooperation agreement with PetroChina Jinzhou Petrochemical Company. In August 2021, Shanshan Tech's 200,000-ton lithium battery anode material integrated base was established in Meishan, Sichuan. In April 2022, Ningbo Shanshan Co., Ltd. announced that through its wholly-owned subsidiary Ningbo Shanshan New Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd., it signed strategic investment agreements with four strategic investors—Ningbo Wending Investment Co., Ltd. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of CATL), BYD Co., Ltd., Ningde Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), and CNPC Kunlun Capital Co., Ltd.—to increase capital in Shanghai Shanshan Lithium Battery Material Technology Co., Ltd., a controlled subsidiary of Shanshan Corporation, with a total investment of RMB 3.05 billion. In late April 2022, Shanshan Tech's 300,000-ton lithium battery anode material integrated base project landed in Kunming, Yunnan. In June 2022, the Shanghai Global Investment Conference was held in Lingang, where Shanshan's anode material industrialization project was showcased as the only project in the Lingang New Area. In June 2022, Shanshan's 40,000-ton silicon-based anode material integrated project was signed to settle in Yinzhou, Ningbo. In August 2022, the first phase of the Sichuan Shanshan New Material project's graphitization workshop was completed and put into production, effectively increasing Shanshan's self-sufficiency rate in graphitization and filling capacity gaps. In May 2023, Shanshan Tech signed strategic agreements with PetroChina Yunnan Petrochemical and PetroChina Southwest Chemical Sales. In May 2023, Yunnan Shanshan New Material signed an agreement with China Merchants Bank Kunming Branch. In December 2023, Shanshan's Finland 100,000-ton integrated project began construction, strengthening its global integrated capacity advantage.
