Overview
SpaceXAI is an American artificial-intelligence and social-media business operating as a subsidiary of SpaceX. The organization began as X.AI Corp., generally branded xAI, which Elon Musk founded in March 2023 with a team of AI researchers. Musk publicly introduced the company in July 2023, presenting it as an alternative to established AI laboratories and emphasizing a stated ambition to build systems focused on truth-seeking, mathematical reasoning and broad practical capability. The company’s principal consumer product became Grok, a generative AI chatbot integrated with the social network X. Grok was introduced in November 2023 and initially restricted to higher-tier X subscribers. Access later expanded to other Premium subscribers, while the product developed through successive model generations, multimodal capabilities, image generation, search-oriented functions and image editing. xAI also released an application programming interface and additional models, including Aurora, a text-to-image system. The Grok brand consequently became the company’s most visible consumer-facing offering and a central component of the wider X ecosystem. Computing infrastructure has been equally important to the organization’s strategy. xAI constructed Colossus, a large-scale supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, to train and operate its models. The project was built rapidly and required substantial electricity, prompting disputes with local authorities, environmental advocates and civil-rights organizations over gas-powered generators, air emissions and permitting. The company subsequently received a local air permit and announced plans for a solar installation near the facility, while litigation concerning later expansion remained part of its public profile. In 2025, xAI broadened beyond model development. It acquired Hotshot, a startup focused on AI video-generation tools, and combined with X Corp., the company operating the former Twitter platform, in an all-stock transaction announced in March. That combination placed an AI model business and a large social platform within the same corporate structure. xAI also described plans for products such as Macrohard, a virtual-assistant and humanoid-AI concept, an AI-powered encyclopedia called Grokipedia, and a game-development studio. The corporate structure changed again in 2026. SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. The business was subsequently reorganized, with employee reductions and changes among its founding and senior management teams. Michael Nicolls, previously associated with SpaceX’s Starlink organization, became president after the departure of CFO Anthony Armstrong. The company later exercised an option to acquire Anysphere, the developer of Cursor, adding AI coding tools to its product portfolio after the transaction closed. In July 2026, the organization was rebranded SpaceXAI. Its activities therefore span foundation-model development, consumer AI assistants, social media, AI infrastructure, data-center services, software development and prospective robotics and entertainment applications.
History
X.AI Corp. was founded by Elon Musk on March 9, 2023, with a group of AI researchers including Jimmy Ba, Zihang Dai, Kyle Kosic, Manuel Kroiss, Ross Nordeen, Toby Pohlen, Christian Szegedy, Yuhuai Wu, Greg Yang and Guodong Zhang. Igor Babuschkin served as chief engineer. Musk publicly announced the venture in July 2023. The company was initially incorporated in Nevada as a public-benefit corporation and later abandoned that status. The organization’s first major product was Grok, introduced in November 2023 as a chatbot integrated with X. Its availability expanded from X Premium+ to the broader Premium service, while the model family developed through Grok-1, Grok-1.5, Grok-1.5 Vision, Grok-2, Grok-3 and Grok-4. xAI also released Grok-1 as open source, launched an API, introduced the Aurora image-generation model, and added search, reflection and image-editing capabilities. To support model training, xAI built the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis. The facility became operational after a rapid construction period in 2024 and used significant power. Temporary methane-gas generators became the focus of environmental and regulatory criticism because advocates argued that emissions and operations required permits that had not initially been obtained. Shelby County later granted an air permit, but controversy continued as the company planned Colossus expansion. Civil-rights organizations subsequently brought litigation alleging that Colossus 2 required federal Clean Air Act permits. xAI also announced a solar project intended to provide part of the site’s electricity. The company expanded through acquisitions and corporate combinations. It acquired Hotshot in March 2025 and combined with X Corp. later that month. xAI also pursued defense-sector work, additional financing and greater computing capacity. It announced concepts including Macrohard, Grokipedia and an AI game studio, reflecting an ambition to move from chatbot development into software, media and automation. In February 2026, SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction. The resulting subsidiary underwent restructuring, employee reductions and substantial founder and executive turnover. SpaceX’s Starlink executive Michael Nicolls became president. The organization then arranged and completed the acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, adding an AI coding business. In May 2026, Musk said xAI would cease operating as a separate company, with Grok and X becoming part of SpaceX’s AI division. The business was rebranded SpaceXAI in July 2026.
