Overview
TVNorge is a Norwegian commercial television channel that forms part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s portfolio in the Nordic market. It began broadcasting on 5 December 1988 and was the first advertising-supported Norwegian television channel. The station initially operated through satellite and cable distribution, at a time when Norwegian viewers had comparatively few domestic television choices. Its launch broadened the country’s commercial television environment before the arrival of TV 2 and established a programming model based on advertising, entertainment and externally distributed content. The channel’s first broadcast was a live variety programme from Oslo Cabaret, featuring Swedish singer Lill-Babs and Norwegian pop group Tomboy. In its early years, the service was styled TVN and combined its own schedule with programming supplied by affiliated local television broadcasters. These local partners generally received designated early-evening windows, while TVNorge controlled the remaining schedule. Game shows, including Casino and Starshot, helped the channel attract viewers and achieve early commercial traction. The brand adopted the name TVNorge in 1995. Its distribution model changed over time as the Norwegian television market moved from analogue terrestrial transmission toward digital delivery. When the last analogue terrestrial transmitter closed in December 2009, the arrangements with local broadcasters ended. TVNorge subsequently continued through private cable and satellite distributors and through RiksTV, Norway’s digital terrestrial television platform. TVNorge has also been associated with notable Norwegian entertainment productions. In 2013, the comedy and variety group Ylvis produced a promotional music video for a TVNorge programme. The resulting song, “The Fox,” became an unexpected international internet phenomenon, giving the channel substantial exposure outside Norway even though TVNorge itself remains a primarily domestic broadcaster. The channel has also carried imported series and, from 2018, participated with sister network Eurosport in broadcasting the Olympic Games. Technologically, TVNorge launched Norway’s first high-definition simulcast of its main channel on 3 October 2008. From 2009, the station began producing its own programmes in HD, while also showing imported high-definition programming such as Rome, CSI and The Big Bang Theory. The HD service initially mirrored the standard-definition schedule, with programmes unavailable in HD presented in standard definition. TVNorge was formerly part of SBS Broadcasting and, together with the rest of that group, became wholly owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media. ProSiebenSat.1 sold the group to Discovery Communications on 14 December 2012. Following the later creation of Warner Bros. Discovery, TVNorge became part of Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA. On 15 January 2024, it adopted a refreshed identity as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s regional effort to standardise the look and presentation of 14 channels. The channel’s role remains that of a Norwegian general-entertainment service within a larger international television and streaming portfolio.
History
TVNorge launched on 5 December 1988 as Norway’s first advertising-supported television channel. Its initial service was delivered through satellite and cable distribution and began with a live variety broadcast from Oslo Cabaret. The opening programme featured Swedish singer Lill-Babs and Norwegian group Tomboy, signalling the channel’s early emphasis on accessible entertainment and live programming. The station originally used the abbreviated name TVN. In its formative period, it worked with several local television broadcasters. Local affiliates generally received an early-evening slot from 17:30 to 18:30 and another slot from 19:30 to 20:30, while TVNorge filled the rest of the schedule with national programming and acquired content. This hybrid structure allowed the channel to provide a degree of local output while operating as a broader commercial service. Game shows such as Casino and Starshot were important to its early success, particularly before TV 2 entered the Norwegian market. In 1995, the channel was rebranded TVNorge, a name that more directly identified it as a Norwegian television service. During the following years, it developed a schedule combining local entertainment, game shows, imported scripted series and other commercial television formats. Its brand and logo were also the subject of a legal dispute in 2003, when software company Novell argued that a newly introduced TVNorge logo was too similar to its own. Novell sought an interim injunction and requested removal of the logo, but the court rejected the application; Novell was ordered to pay NOK 110,000 in legal costs, and the matter did not appear to proceed to a full trial. TVNorge’s distribution environment changed substantially during Norway’s transition from analogue to digital television. The final analogue terrestrial transmitter closed in December 2009, ending the channel’s earlier agreements with local broadcasters. TVNorge continued to be distributed through private cable and satellite operators and through RiksTV, Norway’s digital terrestrial television distributor. The channel also underwent ownership changes. TVNorge was part of SBS Broadcasting, which became wholly owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media. On 14 December 2012, ProSiebenSat.1 sold the group to Discovery Communications. Following the formation of Warner Bros. Discovery, TVNorge became part of Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA and continued to operate as a Norwegian channel within that international portfolio. A major moment in the channel’s public visibility came in 2013, when the comedy group Ylvis created a promotional music video for a TVNorge programme. The song “The Fox” unexpectedly became a global internet success, giving TVNorge visibility well beyond its normal Norwegian audience. The channel later participated in Olympic broadcasting with sister network Eurosport, including coverage from 2018 onward. TVNorge was also an early adopter of high-definition television in Norway. It launched the country’s first HD simulcast of its main channel on 3 October 2008. From 2009, its own productions were made available in HD, alongside imported programmes including Rome, CSI and The Big Bang Theory. The HD service initially followed the same schedule as the standard-definition channel, with material unavailable in high definition shown in standard definition. On 15 January 2024, TVNorge received a refreshed visual identity as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s plan to standardise the presentation of 14 regional channels. The rebrand marked a contemporary stage in the channel’s history while preserving its role as a Norwegian general-entertainment broadcaster.
