Overview

Uber Eats is an online food ordering and delivery platform operated by Uber Technologies. It connects consumers with restaurants, grocery stores, convenience retailers and other merchants through a mobile application and website, while coordinating delivery through independent couriers and, in selected locations, autonomous delivery partners. The service is one of Uber’s principal operating businesses alongside ride-hailing and freight, and has developed from a restaurant-delivery experiment into a broader local-commerce marketplace. The service began in August 2014 in Santa Monica, California, under the name UberFRESH. The initial proposition was relatively narrow: users could order prepared meals through Uber’s existing technology and receive delivery arranged through the company’s network. In 2015, the service was renamed UberEats and received a standalone application, first launching independently in Toronto. The brand subsequently expanded into major international cities, including London and Paris in 2016. Its marketplace model combines restaurant discovery, menus, ordering, payment, delivery tracking and customer support in one digital interface. Uber Eats has repeatedly broadened its offer. In addition to conventional restaurant delivery, it has introduced customer pickup, dine-in ordering, grocery and convenience delivery, subscription benefits through Uber One, virtual or delivery-only restaurant concepts, and experimental autonomous delivery. Partnerships with supermarkets, restaurant chains, robotics companies and local commerce providers have supported this expansion. The 2020 acquisition of Postmates for $2.65 billion strengthened Uber’s position in the United States; Postmates continued to operate as a recognizable separate brand while its capabilities and operations were integrated with Uber’s delivery business. The platform’s international history has included both expansion and retrenchment. Uber sold its Southeast Asian ride-hailing and Eats operations to Grab in 2018 in exchange for a minority interest. It exited South Korea in 2019, transferred or discontinued operations in several countries during 2020, sold its Indian food-delivery business to Zomato in 2020, left Hong Kong in 2021 and Brazil in 2022, and later pursued renewed expansion or acquisitions in selected markets. In 2024, Uber announced plans to consolidate Drizly’s alcohol-delivery operations into Uber Eats. It also proposed acquiring Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda business in Taiwan, but Taiwan’s competition authority blocked the transaction and Uber later terminated it. In 2025, Uber announced an agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Trendyol Go in Turkey. Uber Eats grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic as restaurant dining was restricted and consumers shifted toward home delivery. That growth also intensified scrutiny. Restaurants and regulators have criticized commissions, fee structures, price-parity provisions and the effect of delivery platforms on restaurant economics. Couriers and worker advocates have challenged pay levels, employment classification and automated account-verification systems. The company has also faced litigation alleging anticompetitive conduct and criticism over subscription disclosures and hidden or difficult-to-understand charges. Despite these controversies, Uber Eats remains an active international platform and an important part of Uber’s strategy to build a multi-service consumer ecosystem.

History

Uber Eats emerged from Uber’s effort to extend its app, payments infrastructure and logistics network beyond passenger transportation. In August 2014, Uber launched UberFRESH in Santa Monica, California. The early service offered a limited selection of prepared meals and was associated with Jason Droege, who led Uber’s food-delivery initiative. The operation was renamed UberEats in 2015, when Uber also released a standalone application, initially in Toronto. This established the basic model that remains central to the brand: consumers browse participating merchants, place and pay for orders digitally, and receive status updates while couriers complete the final-mile delivery. International expansion followed. Uber Eats entered London and Paris in 2016 and subsequently built a presence across numerous cities. The company experimented with different operating models, including restaurant partnerships, delivery-only or virtual restaurant concepts, customer pickup and dine-in ordering. In 2018, Uber sold its Southeast Asian operations to Grab, including Eats activity in markets such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The transaction reflected the difficulty of competing simultaneously across fragmented local delivery markets and gave Uber an equity interest in Grab instead of direct operating control. Pricing and merchant economics became increasingly important as the platform scaled. Uber Eats moved away from a simple flat delivery fee in 2018, introducing distance-sensitive pricing in some markets. It later announced a reduction in a stated restaurant commission rate. The service also faced complaints that delivery commissions and contractual price-parity provisions placed pressure on restaurants and could cause delivery customers or dine-in customers to subsidize one another. These issues became central to litigation and public debate about the market power of large delivery platforms. The business expanded and contracted at the same time. Uber Eats withdrew from South Korea in 2019 amid intense competition. In early 2020, Uber transferred its Indian food-delivery business to Zomato in exchange for an equity position. During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand increased sharply as consumers avoided restaurant visits, and Uber reported a substantial rise in new customers. Uber nevertheless announced withdrawals from several countries in 2020, while transferring some operations to Careem. The acquisition of Postmates for $2.65 billion in 2020 strengthened the United States business and supplied additional merchant, courier and technology capabilities. Uber Eats continued to diversify after the pandemic. It left Hong Kong in 2021 and Brazil in 2022, while developing grocery, convenience and other local-commerce categories. It introduced fuel surcharges in the United States and Canada in 2022 and entered partnerships with Tesco, Serve Robotics, Motional, Cartken, Starship Technologies and Coco Robotics. These arrangements tested faster grocery fulfillment and autonomous delivery using sidewalk robots and other machines. In 2024, Uber announced that Drizly would be discontinued and its alcohol-delivery functions consolidated into Uber Eats. More recent strategy has centered on selective market entry and consolidation. Uber proposed acquiring Foodpanda’s Taiwan business from Delivery Hero, but the transaction was blocked by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission and later terminated. Uber also announced a controlling investment in Trendyol Go in Turkey. Alongside geographic and category expansion, the brand has faced ongoing scrutiny concerning courier classification, pay, automated identity verification, fees, subscription disclosures and alleged anticompetitive conduct. Uber Eats remains an active sub-brand of Uber and a major component of the parent company’s multi-service platform.
