Overview

Verizon Value is Verizon's business division for prepaid, no-contract, and value-oriented wireless services. It developed from Verizon's acquisition of TracFone Wireless, Inc., a large United States prepaid wireless provider formerly controlled by América Móvil. The division brings together the TracFone portfolio with Verizon's existing prepaid and value businesses, including Visible and Verizon Prepaid. Its brands serve customers who generally prioritize affordability, flexible payment arrangements, broad retail availability, or access to wireless service without a traditional postpaid contract. The operating history behind Verizon Value reaches back to 1996, when David Topp and F. J. Pollak established Topp Telecom Inc. in Miami, Florida. The company sold prepaid mobile service and later became increasingly connected with Mexico's telecommunications sector. In 1999, Telmex acquired a controlling interest, and in 2000 its mobile operations were separated into América Móvil. Topp Telecom was renamed TracFone Wireless in November 2000 and subsequently expanded through multiple brands, network relationships, retail partnerships, and acquisitions. TracFone operated as a mobile virtual network operator rather than relying on one wholly owned nationwide radio network. Its brands used capacity from several major United States network operators over time. LTE support was introduced progressively across different host networks between 2013 and 2014. The company also moved from a model centered on specially provisioned handsets toward broader device compatibility. It introduced a bring-your-own-device program in 2013 and expanded support to compatible unlocked GSM devices in 2015. The portfolio grew through partnerships and acquisitions. Straight Talk Wireless was launched with Walmart in 2009. América Móvil acquired Simple Mobile in 2012 and Page Plus Cellular in 2013. By 2020, the TracFone family reportedly served approximately 20 million customers across brands including SafeLink Wireless, Simple Mobile, Straight Talk Wireless, Total Wireless, Tracfone Wireless, and Walmart Family Mobile. Verizon announced its proposed acquisition of TracFone on September 14, 2020, in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at up to approximately $6.9 billion. The Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction in November 2021, and the deal closed on November 23, 2021. Following the acquisition, Verizon integrated TracFone's brands into its wireless business and accepted obligations relating to Lifeline participation, affordable 5G service, network migration, device availability, and pricing in California. In November 2022, Verizon formally organized its prepaid and lower-cost activities under the Verizon Value division, led at launch by Angie Klein. The division included TracFone, Verizon Prepaid, and Visible, while retaining a portfolio of distinct consumer brands and distribution models. Verizon has since rationalized and repositioned the portfolio. Total Wireless was relaunched as Total by Verizon in September 2022 and positioned against competing value brands such as Cricket Wireless and Metro. Verizon subsequently reinstated the Total Wireless name in July 2024 and shifted the service toward unlimited plans. Verizon also announced plans to discontinue the GoSmart, Net10, and Page Plus brands, with a later timetable for California, while moving customers toward Verizon SIM cards and compatible devices. Verizon Value therefore functions less as a single consumer-facing product than as a portfolio and operating structure for Verizon's prepaid and budget wireless businesses.

History

The business now known as Verizon Value is rooted in TracFone Wireless, a United States prepaid wireless provider created as Topp Telecom Inc. in 1996. David Topp and F. J. Pollak founded the company in Miami, Florida. Its early model centered on prepaid mobile service, which allowed customers to purchase service without the long-term contracts and credit requirements associated with conventional postpaid plans. In February 1999, Telmex invested $57.5 million for a 55 percent controlling interest in Topp Telecom. Telmex later separated its mobile operations into América Móvil in 2000, making Topp Telecom part of the new telecommunications group. Topp Telecom adopted the TracFone Wireless name in November 2000. Under América Móvil, the company developed a broad multi-brand and multi-network model serving value-oriented customers across the United States. TracFone expanded through retail alliances and acquisitions. It partnered with Walmart to launch Straight Talk Wireless in 2009. América Móvil acquired Simple Mobile in 2012 and Page Plus Cellular in 2013. The company's brands progressively introduced LTE access through different host networks from 2013 to 2014. TracFone also changed its device strategy: after initially relying heavily on handsets tied to its own service, it began a bring-your-own-device program in 2013 and expanded it to compatible unlocked GSM phones in 2015. The portfolio included Tracfone Wireless, Straight Talk Wireless, SafeLink Wireless, Simple Mobile, Total Wireless, Page Plus Cellular, Net10, GoSmart, and Walmart Family Mobile, among others. SafeLink also connected the business to the federal Lifeline program, which subsidizes qualifying communications services for eligible low-income customers. By the time Verizon agreed to acquire TracFone in 2020, the portfolio reportedly served roughly 20 million customers. Verizon announced the proposed acquisition on September 14, 2020. The transaction, valued at up to approximately $6.9 billion, received FCC approval on November 22, 2021 and closed the next day. Verizon agreed to conditions involving affordable 5G access for Lifeline participants and continued participation in the subsidy program. The California Public Utilities Commission imposed additional conditions covering network migration, Lifeline participation, no-cost 5G devices for qualifying customers, customer-base expansion, and price comparability. After the acquisition, Verizon integrated the prepaid portfolio into its wireless operations. In November 2022, it established Verizon Value as the organizational division responsible for TracFone and Verizon's existing prepaid and value activities, including Visible. Angie Klein led the division at its formation. Verizon also sought to sharpen brand positioning. Total Wireless became Total by Verizon in September 2022 and received expanded retail attention as a competitor to Cricket Wireless and Metro. In July 2024, the Total Wireless name returned and the service was repositioned around unlimited plans. Portfolio consolidation has continued. Verizon announced that GoSmart, Net10, and Page Plus would be retired, while customers of remaining TracFone brands were being migrated toward Verizon SIM cards and devices. Verizon Value consequently represents both a collection of consumer brands and an integration program: it preserves prepaid and value propositions while progressively aligning legacy brands with Verizon's network, technology, retail, and compliance systems.
