Overview
Obsidian Entertainment is an American video game development studio based in Irvine, California. Founded in June 2003 by former Black Isle Studios developers Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, Chris Parker, Darren Monahan, and Chris Jones, the company inherited a creative tradition associated with computer role-playing games such as Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and Baldur’s Gate. Its early business depended heavily on licensed sequels and collaborations with publishers, but the studio later developed an increasingly distinctive identity through original intellectual property. Obsidian’s first major project was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, a sequel to BioWare’s role-playing game. Although the title received positive attention for its writing and thematic ambition, its compressed production schedule contributed to technical problems and cut content. Obsidian subsequently led development of Neverwinter Nights 2 for Atari, followed by the Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir expansions. These projects established the studio as a specialist in sophisticated, party-based role-playing games, while also exposing the challenges of working under publisher deadlines. The studio’s first original intellectual property was Alpha Protocol, a modern spy role-playing game published by Sega in 2010. Its unusual combination of dialogue-driven role-playing, stealth, shooting, and branching consequences earned a dedicated following despite mixed reviews and weak commercial performance. During the same period Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas for Bethesda Softworks. The game became one of the studio’s most influential releases, combining the Fallout setting with an emphasis on faction politics, moral ambiguity, exploration, and player agency. It also reinforced the company’s reputation for ambitious design alongside launch-period technical issues. Obsidian developed Dungeon Siege III for Square Enix and South Park: The Stick of Truth for South Park Digital Studios and Ubisoft. Several other projects were cancelled, including Futureblight, Dwarfs, Aliens: Crucible, and Stormlands. The cancellation of Stormlands in 2012 led to layoffs and intensified a financial crisis. To fund a return to classic isometric role-playing, Obsidian used Kickstarter for Project Eternity, later released as Pillars of Eternity. The campaign exceeded its funding target, and the finished game was commercially and critically successful, helping stabilize the studio and enabling a stronger focus on original properties. Pillars of Eternity was followed by Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire and Tyranny, while The Outer Worlds expanded Obsidian’s reach with a first-person science-fiction role-playing game. Microsoft acquired Obsidian in November 2018, making it part of Xbox Game Studios. Under Microsoft, the studio broadened its portfolio beyond large role-playing productions. Grounded introduced a cooperative survival format, Pentiment presented a historically themed narrative adventure with a distinctive visual style, and Avowed returned the studio to first-person fantasy role-playing in the Pillars of Eternity setting. Obsidian has also continued work on The Outer Worlds 2. Its positioning remains centered on authored worlds, player-directed stories, consequential choices, and character-focused role-playing rather than on a single genre or licensed universe.
History
Obsidian Entertainment was established on June 12, 2003, shortly before the closure of Black Isle Studios. Its five founders had worked on influential role-playing games at Interplay, and they formed the new company to continue making ambitious RPGs after the cancellation of projects at Black Isle and the deterioration of Interplay’s business position. The studio initially pursued publisher-backed work and considered projects for Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Take-Two, including the unproduced Futureblight. LucasArts became Obsidian’s first major partner. Rather than developing a new Star Wars concept, Obsidian was asked to create a sequel to BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic. The Sith Lords was produced under a demanding schedule and released in 2004 with substantial content removed and technical problems that were later addressed in part by community restoration work. Obsidian then developed Neverwinter Nights 2 for Atari, with BioWare providing technical assistance. The game launched in 2006 and received two substantial expansions in 2007 and 2008. The late 2000s brought a mixture of new opportunities and cancellations. Disney cancelled Dwarfs, a proposed Snow White-related action game, after a change in corporate direction. Sega cancelled Aliens: Crucible in 2009, but continued its relationship with Obsidian through Alpha Protocol. The spy RPG was released in 2010 after a lengthy and unsettled production. In parallel, Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas for Bethesda. Released in October 2010, it was praised for its writing, factions, and open-ended role-playing, although launch bugs damaged its reputation. Dungeon Siege III followed in 2011 and was the first Obsidian game to use the studio’s Onyx engine. Microsoft’s cancellation of Stormlands in 2012 caused layoffs and contributed to a serious financial crisis. Obsidian responded by crowdfunding Project Eternity, which became Pillars of Eternity. The game’s success restored the company’s stability and encouraged a strategic shift toward original properties. Later projects included Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and The Outer Worlds, a first-person science-fiction RPG published by Private Division in 2019. Microsoft acquired Obsidian in November 2018. As an Xbox Game Studios team, Obsidian expanded into smaller and stylistically distinct projects while retaining its RPG focus. The studio released Grounded and Pentiment, continued its fantasy work through Avowed, and began developing The Outer Worlds 2. Its history is marked by a recurring tension between large licensed productions and the creative control offered by original intellectual property, with the latter becoming increasingly important after Pillars of Eternity.
