Overview

SAP is a German multinational enterprise-software company headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg. Its products help organizations manage finance, procurement, supply chains, manufacturing, human resources, customer relationships, analytics, and other core business processes. The company’s name derives from Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung, translated as Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing. SAP was founded in 1972 by five former IBM engineers who pursued the idea of an integrated, real-time business data system. Its first customer was the German subsidiary of Imperial Chemical Industries, for which the founders developed payroll and accounting programs. Rather than relying on separate files and overnight batch processing, the system was designed around centralized data and immediate access. This principle became central to SAP’s identity and eventually informed the “R” designation used in products such as SAP R/1, R/2, and R/3. The company’s first commercial product, the RF financial-accounting system, appeared in 1973. SAP later expanded its software into materials management, production planning, and other business functions. SAP R/2, launched in 1979, established the company as a significant provider of mainframe-based enterprise applications. SAP R/3, released in 1992, moved the company toward client-server computing and helped make integrated enterprise resource planning practical for a much broader international customer base. SAP became a public company in 1988 and joined Germany’s DAX index in 1995. During the 1990s it shifted from mainframe systems to client-server architecture and broadened its international partner and customer network. R/3 was subsequently succeeded by SAP ERP Central Component and SAP ERP 6.0, while the company also invested in its own in-memory database technology, SAP HANA. HANA became a foundation for later cloud and analytics products and for the company’s transition toward modern, continuously updated enterprise platforms. During the 2010s SAP accelerated its move from traditional licensed software and customer-managed installations toward subscription-based cloud services. It acquired companies in travel and expense management, procurement, human resources, field service, and related categories, including Concur Technologies and Fieldglass. The strategy expanded SAP’s reach beyond classic ERP and helped it compete more directly with cloud-oriented enterprise-software vendors. SAP also formed infrastructure and technology partnerships with IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Microsoft. SAP’s current portfolio spans enterprise resource planning, human capital management, customer experience, spend management, supply-chain management, enterprise performance management, business network services, databases, analytics, application development, artificial intelligence, and cloud infrastructure. SAP S/4HANA is the company’s principal modern ERP platform, while SAP Business Technology Platform provides data, integration, application-development, and automation capabilities. SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Ariba, SAP Concur, and SAP Fieldglass extend the portfolio into workforce management, procurement, travel, and external labor. The company serves large enterprises, public-sector organizations, and small and midsized businesses through direct sales, partners, systems integrators, and cloud marketplaces. Its customers operate across most industries and regions, and SAP maintains development and research centers in numerous countries. The company’s long-term positioning is based on embedding software deeply into mission-critical business processes, combining industry-specific functionality with a common data and technology foundation. In the 2020s, SAP has emphasized cloud migration, business-process transformation, artificial intelligence, and its Joule generative-AI assistant while continuing to support customers operating earlier generations of its…

History

SAP began in June 1972 when five former IBM engineers—Dietmar Hopp, Klaus Tschira, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, and Claus Wellenreuther—left IBM to develop integrated, real-time business software. Their initial work grew out of a project associated with IBM’s migration of systems for Xerox. The founders established a private partnership in Germany under the name SAP Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung. The first customer was Imperial Chemical Industries’ German operation. SAP built payroll and accounting software that stored business information in a shared logical database and made it available without the overnight batch processing common at the time. In 1973 the company released RF, a financial-accounting application that became the basis for a broader modular product family. A sales and support subsidiary, SAP GmbH Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung, was established in 1976, and the original partnership was dissolved in 1981. Headquarters moved to Walldorf the following year. SAP R/2, introduced in 1979, expanded beyond accounting into areas including materials management and production planning. The product helped SAP establish a strong position among large organizations using mainframe computers. In 1988 SAP GmbH became SAP AG, and its shares began trading publicly in Frankfurt and Stuttgart. The company later entered the DAX and other European equity indexes. The release of SAP R/3 in 1992 marked a major technological and commercial transition. R/3 used client-server architecture rather than depending solely on centralized mainframes, allowing companies to connect integrated business applications across distributed computing environments. SAP released successive versions through the mid-1990s and expanded its international presence through subsidiaries, partners, and alliances. In 1996 it began working with Spanish technology consultancy Seidor, supporting the expansion of SAP solutions in Latin America. In the 2000s SAP updated its core ERP architecture. R/3 was replaced by SAP ERP Central Component, and SAP ERP 6.0 followed in 2006. The company also promoted service-oriented architecture and began developing a broader technology platform around databases, analytics, integration, and application development. SAP HANA, its in-memory database platform, became a key technical foundation for real-time analytics and later generations of ERP and cloud products. From 2012 onward, SAP increasingly pursued cloud growth through acquisitions. The purchases of companies such as Ariba, SuccessFactors, Fieldglass, and Concur broadened SAP’s coverage of procurement, human resources, external workforce management, and travel expenses. The Concur transaction in 2014 was particularly significant because it was SAP’s largest acquisition at that point. SAP also deepened partnerships with IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Microsoft to provide infrastructure, hybrid-cloud services, visualization, and mobile capabilities. Shareholders approved the conversion of SAP AG into a European Company in 2014, and the legal change to SAP SE took effect on 7 July 2014. During the following years the company invested in cloud services, Internet-of-Things technologies, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and its Business Technology Platform. SAP also supported startup investment through Sapphire Ventures and participated in the EU Cloud Code of Conduct. In 2019 SAP announced a workforce reduction of about 4,000 positions as part of a shift toward newer cloud and emerging technologies. Leadership changed from a co-CEO arrangement to Christian Klein as sole CEO in 2020 after Jennifer Morgan’s departure. In 2021 SAP and Dediq created SAP Fioneer, a separately structured financial-services business. More recently, SAP has centered its strategy on cloud migration, subscription revenue, business-process transformation, and artificial intelligence. Its Joule assistant is intended to provide conversational support across SAP applications, while later portfolio moves have connected AI capabilities with products such as SuccessFactors and recruiting technology.
