Overview

Toyota is the principal automotive brand of Toyota Motor Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi. The company was incorporated on August 28, 1937, as an automotive spinoff from Toyota Automatic Loom Works, the machinery company founded by Sakichi Toyoda. Kiichiro Toyoda led the automobile project, which had already produced a Type A engine, the A1 passenger-car prototype and the G1 truck before the separate corporation was formed. The company adopted the name Toyota rather than Toyoda in 1936; the change offered a simpler visual identity and avoided direct association with the family name and its literal reference to rice fields. Toyota developed in the difficult conditions of wartime and postwar Japan. It produced trucks during the Second World War, saw its Koromo plant damaged near the end of the conflict, and faced restrictions on passenger-car production during the Allied occupation. A financial crisis in the late 1940s resulted in restructuring, workforce reductions and a separation between manufacturing and sales operations. Demand for trucks during the Korean War helped restore the business. During the 1950s, executives including Eiji Toyoda studied American manufacturing while adapting those methods to Toyota's own emphasis on small-lot production, quality control and employee problem-solving. These practices became the Toyota Production System and, more broadly, the Toyota Way. The Crown, introduced in 1955, demonstrated Toyota's ability to design a complete passenger car. International growth followed through exports and overseas manufacturing, including an early production operation in Brazil. Toyota's first attempt to sell the Crown in the United States was unsuccessful because the car was not well suited to American driving conditions and customer expectations. The company responded with smaller and more market-specific products, including the Corona and Corolla. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla became a defining global compact car and a central pillar of Toyota's scale. The 1970s oil crises strengthened demand for Toyota's relatively economical vehicles in North America and other markets. Toyota's portfolio expanded from compact cars into luxury vehicles, off-road vehicles, pickup trucks, commercial vehicles and motorsport-derived products. Lexus was introduced in the United States in 1989 as a separate luxury marque, while Toyota retained a broad mainstream range. The Land Cruiser and Hilux developed strong reputations for durability and utility in many regions. The 1997 Prius established Toyota as the leading global advocate of mass-market hybrid propulsion. Toyota subsequently sold hybrid versions across numerous vehicle lines while also developing fuel-cell vehicles such as the Mirai and battery-electric vehicles such as the bZ4X. The corporation operates through a wider group that includes Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and other commercial-vehicle interests, and it maintains equity or production relationships with several other manufacturers. Its business includes vehicle design, manufacturing, sales, financing, mobility services, connected technologies and research into robotics, automated driving and hydrogen systems. Toyota announced Woven City, an experimental community near Mount Fuji intended to test mobility, energy and digital technologies. Toyota is known for reliability, manufacturing discipline, resale value, global distribution and a multi-path approach to vehicle electrification. That strategy has supported a large hybrid business but has also drawn criticism from groups that believe the company moved too slowly toward battery-electric vehicles. The company and related subsidiaries have additionally faced scrutiny over recalls, emissions and certification-testing issues. Toyota remains one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, with a product strategy balancing high-volume conventional and hybrid vehicles with battery-electric, hydrogen and performance offe… Toyota Motor China, formally Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (TMCI), is Toyota Motor Corporation's investment subsidiary for the People's Republic of China. Established in July 2001, it coordinates and supports Toyota's broad Chinese-market activities rather than functioning solely as a vehicle sales company. Its responsibilities include investment in manufacturing and research and development, the import and distribution of Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles, dealer-network development, marketing, training, and market-promotion activities. Toyota's commercial relationship with China predates TMCI by several decades. Toyota first exported the Crown to China in September 1964 and opened a representative office in Beijing in October 1980. The company subsequently built its Chinese presence through joint ventures and operating partnerships, including Sichuan Toyota Motor in 1998, Tianjin Toyota Motor in 2000, and Guangzhou Toyota Motor in 2004. These ventures became important production, engineering, engine, sales, and distribution platforms associated with FAW Group and GAC Group. TMCI operates within a larger network that includes FAW Toyota, GAC Toyota, Toyota and Lexus research and development organizations, Toyota Motor Finance (China), engine and manufacturing companies, and Toyota's electric-vehicle technology partnership with BYD. Its role is therefore best understood as a regional investment, coordination, and business-development hub linking Toyota's global resources with Chinese manufacturing partners, suppliers, dealers, technology companies, and public-sector authorities. The company's scope has expanded beyond conventional internal-combustion vehicles. In 2019, Toyota deepened cooperation with FAW and GAC in electrification and intelligent connectivity, supplied hydrogen-fuel-cell components to commercial-vehicle manufacturers, and reached agreements with other companies concerning mobility services and the wider adoption of electrified transportation. These activities reflected Toyota's effort to pursue multiple technology pathways in China, including hybrids, battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, connected services, and mobility businesses. A major later development came on 22 April 2025, when Toyota Motor Corporation and the Shanghai municipal government signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The central project was a wholly owned Lexus electric-vehicle plant in Shanghai's Jinshan District, with production planned to begin in 2027. The agreement signaled a further shift toward locally produced premium electric vehicles and strengthened Toyota's long-term industrial commitment to China. As a regional subsidiary, TMCI remains closely associated with Toyota's Chinese investment, production, research, distribution, and market-development structure, while individual vehicle manufacturing and retail operations are conducted through affiliated companies and joint ventures.

History

Toyota originated in the textile-machinery enterprise established by Sakichi Toyoda. Sakichi's automatic loom technology introduced the principle that a machine should stop when it detects a problem, a concept later associated with Toyota's production philosophy. In 1929, the loom patent was sold to the British firm Platt Brothers, providing capital for Kiichiro Toyoda's automobile initiative. Toyota Automatic Loom Works created an automobile division in 1933. The division completed a Type A engine in 1934, an A1 passenger-car prototype in 1935 and the G1 truck later that year. The Model AA passenger car followed in 1936. After a public naming process, the automobile business adopted Toyota, and Toyota Motor Company was incorporated in 1937. The Koromo plant opened in 1938. Wartime production concentrated on trucks, and the plant suffered damage shortly before Japan's surrender in 1945. Passenger-car production resumed after postwar restrictions were eased, but Toyota entered a serious financial crisis in 1949. Restructuring separated manufacturing and sales functions and reduced the workforce. Orders for trucks connected with the Korean War helped revive operations. In the 1950s, Eiji Toyoda and other managers examined Ford and other American factories. Toyota combined those observations with its own quality and resource constraints to develop just-in-time production, standardized work and continuous improvement. The resulting Toyota Production System became influential well beyond the automotive industry. The Toyopet Crown entered production in 1955 and was followed by international exports, including Land Cruiser sales in the Middle East. Toyota entered Brazil with local production in 1958. Its first United States passenger-car effort, centered on the Crown, struggled, but the company later gained traction with the Corona and other compact vehicles. The Corolla, launched in 1966, became Toyota's most important global volume nameplate. Overseas assembly and joint ventures expanded across North America, Asia and other regions during the following decades. Toyota Motor Corporation was formed in 1982 through the merger of Toyota Motor Company and Toyota Motor Sales Company. In 1989, Toyota introduced Lexus in the United States, establishing a luxury brand alongside its mainstream range. The company also expanded its sport-utility, pickup and commercial-vehicle businesses. The first-generation Prius, launched in 1997, brought gasoline-electric hybrid technology to mass-market customers and became the foundation of Toyota's electrification reputation. The global financial crisis and a series of major recalls placed Toyota under intense scrutiny in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Akio Toyoda became president in 2009 and emphasized quality, product appeal and closer engagement with customers. Toyota later pursued connected vehicles, automated driving, hydrogen fuel cells and battery-electric vehicles. It announced Woven City as a real-world technology laboratory and introduced the bZ battery-electric range, including the bZ4X. In 2023, Koji Sato succeeded Akio Toyoda as president and chief executive officer, with Toyoda becoming chairman. Toyota continues to combine high-volume internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles with battery-electric, hydrogen and performance products. Its current challenges include the pace of battery-electric adoption, regulatory change, supply-chain resilience, software development and governance of certification processes across the group. Toyota’s origins are connected to Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, founded by Sakichi Toyoda. His son Kiichiro Toyoda developed an automobile business within the company during the 1930s, and Toyota Motor Company was established in 1937. Early production included trucks and passenger cars, but the company’s postwar survival depended on disciplined cost control, supplier coordination, and close attention to production problems. The Toyota Production System developed during the postwar period under leaders and engineers including Taiichi Ohno and Shigeo Shingo. Its principles included producing only what was needed, when it was needed, preventing defects from moving through the line, and continuously improving processes. Toyota’s manufacturing and supplier systems later became influential internationally under the broader label of lean production. In 1950, Toyota separated its sales organization from manufacturing during a financial and organizational crisis. Toyota Motor Sales became a separate company, operating a large domestic dealer network while Toyota Motor Company concentrated on production and engineering. As the Japanese market matured and international trade conditions changed, the separation increasingly limited coordination. In 1982, the two companies merged, with Toyota Motor Company becoming Toyota Motor Corporation. The merger reunited manufacturing and sales and created the corporate structure known today. Toyota’s domestic expansion was followed by international growth. The company established or expanded production and sales operations in North America, Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America, and other regions. The Corolla, introduced in 1966, became a particularly important global model and helped establish Toyota as a major international automaker. Local manufacturing enabled the company to reduce trade exposure, adapt products to regional requirements, and develop relationships with governments, suppliers, and dealers. The company entered the premium segment with Lexus, introduced in 1989. Lexus combined Toyota production methods with a separate luxury identity, dealer experience, and product strategy. Its initial success in North America challenged established luxury brands and created a long-term premium business for the group. Environmental technology became another defining part of Toyota’s history. The Prius was launched in Japan in 1997 as the first mass-produced hybrid passenger car. Its gasoline-electric system offered lower fuel consumption without requiring external charging, and subsequent Prius generations and hybrid Toyota and Lexus models expanded the technology globally. Toyota later added plug-in hybrids, fuel-cell vehicles, and battery-electric vehicles to its portfolio, while continuing to argue for a multi-pathway approach to decarbonization. Toyota has also pursued partnerships and diversification. It deepened relationships with Daihatsu and Hino, invested in or partnered with Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki, and technology companies, and expanded into financial services, connected vehicles, automated driving, robotics, and mobility platforms. Motorsport, particularly through Toyota Gazoo Racing, has supported product development and brand communication. In the 2000s and 2010s, Toyota faced both rapid global growth and quality crises. Large recalls beginning in 2009 created reputational and regulatory pressure and prompted changes to quality governance, customer communication, and regional decision-making. More recently, certification and testing irregularities involving Toyota and group companies have renewed attention on governance, compliance, and the balance between speed, autonomy, and centralized oversight. Under Akio Toyoda and then Koji Sato, Toyota has increasingly presented itself as a mobility company rather than solely a vehicle producer. Strategic priorities include carbon neutrality across the vehicle life cycle, software-defined vehicles, batteries, hydrogen, automated driving, connected services, and experimental urban environments such as Woven City. Toyota’s continuing challenge is to combine its established strengths in manufacturing scale, reliability, and hybrid systems with faster innovation in software and zero-emission transportation.

Toyota recalls 30,978 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids over ECU software glitch that can shut the vehicle off[28]

Toyota initiated a safety recall (NHTSA recall 26V659; Toyota recall 26TA22) covering 30,978 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles built between July 22 and August 19, 2026, because the motor generator ECU may not properly complete the motor initialization process, potentially leaving drivers with warning lights and reduced power or, in the worst case, a complete shutdown that Toyota treats as a safety risk. The remedy is a software update for the motor generator ECU performed at Toyota dealerships; dealer notification began on October 7, 2026, and owner notification is scheduled to run from November 22 to December 6, 2026. Toyota cited 38 field technical reports and 58 warranty claims in the US that could be related, first identified the issue through a field report in Japan in June 2026, and the recall documents make no mention of accidents or injuries.

Toyota recalls 2024-2025 Tacoma vehicles over shock absorber defect[23]

Toyota is recalling certain 2024 Tacoma Hybrid and 2024-2025 Tacoma vehicles because the metal flange on the front and rear shock absorbers may corrode and fail, causing the external oil reservoir to detach and creating a road hazard. The recall potentially affects 48,280 vehicles; dealers will inspect and replace the front and rear shock absorber assemblies as necessary.
